On December 8, 1980, John Lennon shot four times as he walked through the entrance hall of the Dakota apartment building in New York City where he lived. At 10:50 a.m., Lennon tried to accompany his wife Yoko Ono to Dakota after spending several hours playing a song at Record Plant Studio. Mark David Chapman was waiting for Lennon in a bridge. When Lennon passed, Chapman fired five shots. A missing. Two others hit Lennon in the back while two hit him in the left shoulder. The puncture bullets caused serious internal damage. John Lennon was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital at 11:07 p.m.

A third version has Lennon’s last words as just ‘Yes.’ John Lennon never regained consciousness after entering the police car.

In the days after John Lennon’s assassination, hundreds of memorials and tributes were held for him around the world. On December 14, 1980, millions of people around the world stood in silence for ten minutes in honor of John Lennon. The largest of these collections was in New York City’s Central Park, where 100,000 people showed up. Every year on the anniversary of Lennon’s death, there is a memorial service in front of Capital Records, near Lennon’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are many permanent memorials to John Lennon, including a garden called Strawberry Fields in Central Park near the murder scene and the Imagine Peace Tower off the coast of Iceland.
