Free outdoor concerts

Grab a lawn because, according to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, there are many free outdoor concerts performed by various groups, including the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. Outdoor concerts usually start sometime in the spring and go through the summer months.

Every Borough

Free concerts take place indoors and outdoors, including Central Park. Seating is based on location. According to New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, concerts are performed at venues in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

Children

Some concerts and festivals adapted for families with small children. According to mommypoppins.com, these events usually take place several times a week during the summer months, or as early as Memorial Day.

What to bring

Bring a blanket to sit on and some snacks. If you do not want to sit on the grass, sidewalk or dirt, a blanket is recommended for an outdoor concert. Leave glass bottles, jars and coolers at home.

No cameras

You should avoid giving cameras and camcorders live performances. According to the City Parks Foundation, many artists do not want to be distracted by camera flashes or flashing lights from a camcorder. Many do not want their performances to be recorded. New York City offers many free concerts, out in parks or in small places. You can hear everything from rock, folk to jazz for free.
