ITunes Online Music Store

1.

Go to the iTunes website (see Resources) to download the latest version of the Windows operating system software. Mac users should scroll further down the page for download instructions. ITunes is the most popular way to buy music for MP3 players.

Once the software is installed locally on your computer, click on the ‘iTunes Store’ link on the left to browse for the latest available music, or use the search box to find specific artists and titles. Purchasing music from iTunes requires you to set up an account with a username, password, valid email address, and credit card information.

3.

Clicking the ‘Sign In’ button at the top right-hand corner of the iTunes Store will prompt you to create a new account or sign in to an existing one. Click ‘Create New Account’ and follow the instructions to complete the account setup.

4.

Once an account has been set up and the user has found a song or two to buy, buying is as simple as clicking the ‘Buy Now’ button next to the song. Once the song has been downloaded, simply click on the ‘Buy’ link on the left to view, play, move the song to a playlist or burn the song to CD.

5.

Because there may be issues with iTunes software that could lead to the loss of purchased music, it is best to back up purchased songs immediately by burning them to a disc. Place a blank disc suitable for music files in your computer’s internal or external CD / DVD burner, and click the ‘Burn to Disc’ button at the bottom right of the ‘Buy’ screen. Or click ‘Settings’ under the top menu, then ‘Advanced’ and ‘Burn’ to get to the burn options pop-up screen. All selected songs will be burned to the disc.

Tips and warnings

  • When choosing a music purchase service, Microsoft digital music writer Scott Steinberg (www.microsoft.com/athome/music/onlinemusic.aspx) suggests how often purchases should be run, the service provider’s music directory, and the file format compatibility with some MP3 players. Given these factors will determine if a service per song like iTunes is best or if a subscription service like Napster (www.napster.com) or Real Networks Rhapsody (www.rhapsody.com) would better suit your needs. Check out legal, free music download sites like www.mp3.com and www.emusic.com.
  • Songs purchased through iTunes are not downloaded in MP3 format. Before adding them to an MP3 player, they must be converted to MP3, which requires additional CD ripping software. Free Rip is a free shareware program that converts music to many different formats and can be downloaded at www.freerip.com.
  • Today MP3 players are the modern equivalent of yesterday’s Walkman and portable CD players. Whether it’s about exercising, exercising or walking in peace and quiet around nearby, people move around with earplugs in their ears and digital musical instruments strapped to their arms or decorated in their pockets. MP3 players have listened to and acquired music very conveniently and cost-effectively. Just as there are many varieties of brands, types and sizes of MP3 players on the market, there are also several ways to buy music for these handy little devices.
